    ABOUT YOUR TAX BILL
The contents of your real estate and/or manufactured home tax bill are prescribed by Ohio law. Only one parcel of property or manufactured home can be included on a bill. Failure to receive a tax bill does not excuse failure to pay or delay to pay any taxes, special assessments, or other charges shown on such bill or avoid any penalty, interest or charge for such delay, pursuant to ORC 323.13. Please examine your tax bill carefully. Make sure you receive all bills that you are to pay.
For a full explanation of the elements of the tax bill visit our website at http://www.co.portage.oh.us/treasurer/bill.htm.

Tax increases. Any increase in the amount of your current real estate and/or manufactured home taxes results from valuation changes, or from the passage of tax levies or bond issues by the voters of your taxing district. Your County Treasurer has no authority to increase or decrease your taxes.

Interest and penalties. Interest is charged against delinquent real estate taxes twice each year: in August against all prior year taxes, and in December against all unpaid delinquent taxes as of December 1st. Current taxes that remain unpaid at the end of each collection will be assessed an additional 10% late penalty.

    PAYMENT OPTIONS
In-office and by mail. The Portage County Treasurer’s Office accepts in-office payments by cash, check, money order, and credit/debit cards during regular office hours. Our office discourages cash payments by mail, and does not accept credit/debit card payments by mail.

Online and phone. Taxpayers wishing to pay by credit/debit card or electronic check may do so online or by phone by visiting our website at http://www.co.portage.oh.us/treasurer/Payments.htm and following the provided instructions. A convenience fee based on the amount of the payment will be charged. This fee is paid directly to the Treasurer’s payment processing vendor, and is not received by the office.

Monthly payment plans. The Treasurer’s Office offers a tax pre-payment program to simplify the payment process through the use of a monthly installment plan. Please contact the Treasurer’s Office for details.

Delinquent payment plans. Taxpayers who have fallen behind on their payments may establish a contract payment plan with our office to spread their delinquent tax burden over a manageable period of time. Payment plans do not mitigate or alter the taxpayer’s responsibility to make payment on current taxes. Please contact the Treasurer’s Office for details.

REQUIRED NOTICES Notice: If real estate taxes are not paid within sixty days from the date they are certified delinquent, the property is subject to foreclosure for tax delinquency. If manufactured home taxes are not paid within sixty days after the Auditor’s Office delivers the delinquent manufactured home tax list to the Treasurer’s Office, you and your home may be subject to collection proceedings for tax delinquency.

Notice: If the taxes charged against this parcel or manufactured home have been reduced by the owner occupancy credit for residences occupied by the owner but the property is not a residence occupied by the owner, the owner must notify the County Auditor’s office not later than March 31 of the year following the year for which taxes are due. Failure to do so may result in the owner being convicted of a fourth degree misdemeanor, which is punishable by imprisonment up to 30 days, a fine up to $250, or both, and in the owner having to repay the amount by which the taxes were erroneously or illegally reduced, plus any interest that may apply. If the taxes charged against this parcel or manufactured home have not been reduced by the owner occupancy credit and the parcel includes a residence occupied by the owner, the parcel may qualify for the tax reduction. To obtain an application for the tax reduction or further information, the owner may contact the County Auditor’s office at 449 S. Meridian St., P.O. Box 1217, Ravenna, OH 44266, or by phone at 330-297-3570.

    OTHER INFORMATION
Questions and phone numbers. Please direct questions regarding the payment of taxes or payment programs to the Treasurer’s Office at 330-297-3586. Questions regarding valuation, special assessments, tax rates, and tax reduction programs should be directed to the Auditor’s Office. A list of phone numbers for the Auditor’s Office, listed by subject area, is available at http://www.co.portage.oh.us/auditor.htm.

Homestead Exemption. As of January 1, 2014, qualifying for the Homestead Exemption requires proof of household income or disability for most program participants. Call the Auditor’s Office for details at 330-297-3571.

Active Service Extension Act. Eligible active duty military members may take more time to pay their real estate taxes without penalty or interest. For information on this program, contact the Treasurer’s Office at 330-297-3586.

Electronic Tax Bill Notices. Taxpayers wishing to receive electronic tax bill notices in lieu of paper bills may sign up to do so online.

Receipts. Your cancelled check is a valid receipt. If you wish to receive a stamped receipt, return the entire bill along with a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Please write your registration number on the check.
